Okay… all jokes aside.
I read through my boy Assanova‘s The Assanova Method 2.0 – and he had a part in there where he talked about finding your “look” and he even had pictures of himself to use as an example.
I’m still trying to find my look…
For years I got my hair cut pretty short…. like real short. From halfway through high school and all through college. I was paying $12 about every 2-4 weeks at first, before I decided “fuck it, I’ll just do it myself” and went and bought some clippers and just sheared myself every couple of weeks. It only took a couple of tries to get pretty solid at it…. I mean, hell, all I did was put the #2 guard on and shave my whole head….
But then….at some point in 2008 or so… that got old to me… so I grew it out a little bit and then cut it down into a mohawk….
but only for a week or so and then I shaved that off…. back to cutting it myself, #2, every two weeks or so… for about the next year.
Then, I knew I was sick of that, around the time that I started dating my last ex, I also started growing out my hair….
I did some research, and found a barber shop in town that seemed to be just what I was looking for.
I went…. and there was only one barber left. The owner. Business was so slow that he was putting the shop up for sale. But… dude could cut hair! He gave me one of the best haircuts I’d ever had. My girlfriend loved it, all my female twitter and facebook friends loved it.
But, after cutting my own hair and not paying for haircuts for about 4 years straight…. it was hard for me to justify the $15 indulgence too often.
I’d go 6-8 weeks between cuts, and then, eventually while dating February Fling and before my first date with Crush…. I grabbed my #2 clippers… and shaved it all back off.
I went back to cutting my own hair. It was cheap and easy… and I was broke.
But after a few months, I grew tired of that again, and when I quit my job this past summer and realized the clean-shaven look is best for interviews…. I started to grow it out again.
Because,.. and I mentioned this on Culcept’s post the other day…. I think the contrast plays well. Goatee with short/no hair… less facial hair with longer hair.
I grew it out, only getting it cut every few months….. but since I’m back in my hometown I don’t really know where to go to get it cut.
I went to barber with an idea in mind of what I wanted a couple months ago, and he got pretty close to pulling it off, but it didn’t look as good as I’d imagined. So I didn’t get it cut for awhile… I let it grow out to the point where I was having to part it just to keep it looking good. Which basically lead to me rocking the Pete Campbell look…
It was cool for awhile. But, you can only go so long with out a haircut before at least needing to get it trimmed up around the ears and whatnot.
So, I went to a barber I’d gone to a long time ago. One, I knew was good at cutting hair, and is pretty much a perfectionist at what he does. He’d cut my hair before when I used to get it real short.
Only this time I didn’t want it so short.
I told him what I wanted.
He didn’t really listen…. he did, as in he didn’t cut it as short as I used to get it. But, he cut it a lot shorted than I wanted it. And I even showed him how much I wanted off of the top…. he took at least twice that off….
And, I shaved yesterday.
No facial hair at all…. and a short haircut.
I look like I’m 17 again. I’m not particularly happy about it either….
I guess I won’t be getting a haircut for awhile. Gotta let it grow out some for sure.
Then, I think I’m back to Yelp to try to find a new barber shop. I like real barber shops. I don’t do chains (SuperCuts?, Fantastic Sams) – they suck ass. Oh, and I don’t trust a woman to cut my hair. So, in a couple of months, I’ll have to try something else out…. but, what?
I can’t help but to look to celebrities. Especially those that change their hair a lot.
Johnny Depp for instance….
This just really goes to show how much your hairstyle and facial hair combination can really alter your appearance…
Here’s another example…. Brad Pitt… notice how much younger he looks with the real short hair and the no facial hair…
One last example…. Colin Farrell…
One thing I like about looking at male celebrity hairstyles is it motivates me to try new shit out myself. No reason to get stagnant and rock the same look for years on end…
